Pilates Equipment

Pilates is a physical and mental set of exercises that stresses breathing, making slender lean muscles and focusing on the proper alignment of the spine. Through proper practice Pilates streamlines the body, combats stress, and improves awareness and coordination. The key words to thing about are breathing, concentration, and smooth precise movements.

There are two ways to exercise, one is merely with a Pilates mat and nothing else while the other method involves proper posing with various Pilates equipment such as the Pilates reformer, Pilates ball, Pilates ring, Pilates chair, Pilates band and other devices.

Yoga and Pilates are not the same, but they have similar goals of increasing flexibility, improving body alignment and reducing stress. Flexibility is increased through many different stretches which are done sitting, standing and lying down. Body alignment is achieved through workouts that cover the entire body and muscle structure. No certain area is overworked or concentrated on as with typical workouts. This makes the muscles long and slender which promotes good posture.

Proper breathing one of the most important aspects to Pilates and can be difficult to learn from Pilates videos. Calm controlled breathing not only helps to calm a chaotic mind, it also improves the supply of blood to the muscles and brain which aids in the elimination of toxins as well as stress and tension.

It is important to wear Pilates clothing that does not hinder movement and is comfortable to wear and sweat in. Materials with plenty of stretch, such as spandex, are very favorable, although a sweat suit will be adequate for most people.

Pilates was developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates for himself to recover from his numerous ailments such as rickets, asthma, rheumatism and short spells of fever. By the time he was fourteen he had conquered those afflictions and was an accomplished gymnast and diver. He was actually asked to model for anatomy books of the time. He started a gym in the 1930s and began teaching his methods to others, eventually calling it Pilates.

Now Pilates is practiced by people from all walks of life, from celebrities to minorities. Pilates DVDs can instruct people from home, but classes are available in many different places and plenty of times.
