Pilates Ring

A Pilates ring is not a device that was used when Pilates was first developed, but over the years, rings have started to become more and more useful to those who do Pilates.

If you would like to see if using a Pilates ring could be good for you, try the following exercise:

• Stand with your legs apart and shoulders slightly bent. Press down on your shoulders (away from your ears) and slightly lift up your chin. Make your ab muscles tight and focus on keeping your spine long and straight.

• Take the Pilates ring (or two) and place them behind your back. Your arms should be parallel with your elbows, but bent just a bit. Your hands should go as high as you can put them without needing to push forward your chest. Your spine should remain straight.

• While holding a Pilates ring, push the ring in and release it in pulsating motions. You should pay special attention to control the movements of your arms as well as your shoulders. You can do this exercise in repetitions. You might want to start with five and then move to ten after you build enough strength.

This is just one of a number of exercises that can be done with a Pilates ring. By making sure that you are doing the exercises properly, you may soon find that the rings may be one of your favorite pieces of Pilates equipment.
