If you are considering watching Pilates videos to improve
your skills, you first need to be prepared for all other aspects of
Pilates as well. It is optimal to get a Pilates DVD rather than a VHS
tape. Aside from the fact that the quality of DVDs is better, DVDs also
allow you more freedom to do the exercises you want to do and find them
easily. This is true because a DVD has chapters that you can instantly
choose to work on certain Pilates exercises. This is much more difficult
to do with VHS tapes.
• There are certain pieces of equipment that are useful with
Pilates videos. Often when you purchase a video, there will be a list
of equipment that will be used in the DVD. Check this list carefully
to make sure that you don’t start watching a video and then find
out that you do not have the necessary equipment.
• Dress appropriately – When doing Pilates and watching
Pilates videos, the clothing you wear should be snug. It should not
be so tight that it makes you uncomfortable, but it should definitely
not be loose either. The last thing you want is to have your shorts
bunching up when you are on the mat or to have your shirt get in the
way.
• Be patient with yourself – When watching Pilates videos
it can be easy to get frustrated. Sometimes it feels as if the things
you are doing – no matter how hard you may try – are simply
not nearly as good as the things the instructor on the video is doing.
Guess what? You are right. You should not expect to be able to do things
as well as the instructor. She likely has been doing Pilates for years.
Just be patient and results will come soon enough.
