Yoga and Pilates
There are a number of fundamental questions that a person
can ask him or herself when trying to understand the differences between
yoga and Pilates.
The first thing that you need to do is consider what your main needs
are. Ask yourself if you need to stretch better or if you are hoping
to get a stronger core. Do you want to lengthen your body or simply
improve your breathing? For the purpose of stretching, yoga is considered
to be better than Pilates, but Pilates offers the development of several
core muscles that will help strengthen back and abdominal muscles much
more than yoga.
There are a number of styles that you may want to compare as well.
Whereas Pilates has five main styles – Winsor, Stott, Fletcher,
Power and Rael. There are easily at least a dozen yoga styles. Many
Pilates styles require equipment like rings or balls, but most yoga
styles only require the yogi and maybe a yoga mat. This is another area
where yoga and Pilates differ. Sometimes yoga is viewed as more of an
exercise in spirit than anything else. Pilates differs from yoga in
this aspect also.
In both yoga and Pilates, learning can be done alone or in a group
setting. By and large, however, yoga is viewed as easier to learn and
perform in groups than Pilates. Even though some of the Pilates movements
focus on form, in general Pilates moves from one area to the next much
more quickly than yoga. Because of this it takes people more practice
to get the process down. You may not feel comfortable trying to keep
up with the changes in Pilates if you are in a group setting.
There are benefits in yoga and Pilates. Some people choose to do both
exercises. Using the aforementioned information should be able to better
help you understand which exercise is best for you.
